Non Playoff team week 9 matchups

When high school football teams get together in August to prepare for the upcoming season they all have one goal that is the same as every other team. And that is to make the Kansas state playoffs. With the new classifications and playoff set up that Kshsaa has installed for the 2018 & 2019 seasons every team makes the playoffs except in 3A & 2A plus the two 8 man divisions. In years past every team played a nine game schedule and this year they had an eight game schedule.  In class 3A and 2A there were 6 team districts with four out of six making the playoffs. The remaining two teams in each district would get a week 9 game with another non playoff team from another district.

These games aren’t just for nothing . A win or a loss will not mean much but coaches and players should be using this game to try and get better. Use some younger players in varsity action to gain experience. For the seniors from each team it will be their last high school game. Almost every former high school football player has said at one time or another ” I wish I could play one last game ” . There are ten teams in the Sek-sports coverage area that will play a week 9 non playoff game. Well make that eight since Northeast Arma drew a game against a team that has forfeited their last few games and will do so again .

3A non playoff match up

Iola Vs. Columbus  @ Riverside Park , Iola Kansas

The Mustangs of Iola have a 2-6 record and still had an opportunity to make the playoffs in week 8 but needed a win against a very good Prairie View team and some other help in the district.  They lost that game 42-14 and Burlington and Girard both posted victories to end any playoff hopes the Mustangs had after losing two straight games. Iola started the season 0-4 before getting their first wins in week 5 and 6 against Osawatomie and Burlington .

The Columbus titans have had a tough 2018 season after collecting at least 7 wins in each of their last seasons. They will enter the week nine match up with a 1-7 record. They finished in 5th place in district #1 after only defeating a win less Baxter Springs team 52-14.  Both Iola and Columbus have lost to Parsons and Girard . The teams only common opponents.

Baxter Springs @ Osawatomie

The Baxter Springs Lions come into the week 9 game with a 1-7 record. Their lone victory was over 2A Riverton in week two 20-18.  They finished 6th in district 1 with zero wins and negative -105 points.  They were over matched in every contest during district play.  The Lions haven’t had a win loss record like this since 2014 season where they finished 1-8. They will have a chance to double their win total against a win less Osawatomie squad.

Osawatomie is 0-8 and finished last in district 2 .  They have yet to play in a close game where they even had a chance at a victory .  The Trojans finished last in the Pioneer league with a 0-5 record.  2015 is the last time the Trojans finished with a winning record . They had a 7-3 record that year after losing in the first round of the playoffs.

2A non playoff match ups

Erie @ Central Heights

The Red Devils from Erie finished district 1 play with a 2-3 record and 3-5 overall .  Erie won their first district game against Riverton 44-19 and looked on their way to making a run at a playoff spot. After losing three straight to Humboldt, Jayhawk Linn, and Southeast Cherokee they had to settle for the 5th spot and a non playoff game game in week 9. There is no way to sugar coat it but Erie’s football team has been a mess for most of the season. They have had several kids kicked out of games this year with bad conduct type of play and fighting .  That is a shame because there are some really good kids on the Red Devil team that deserved a much better season.

Central Heights comes into week 9 with a 2-6 record after losing last week in a win and your in game for the last playoff spot in district 2. West Franklin defeated the Vikings 63-0 in that game. They have wins against a 1 win Wabaunsee team and against Oskaloosa , who has forfeited three straight games.

Cherryvale @ Whitewater Remmington

The Cherryvale Chargers have not had a season quite like they are used to.  They knew coming into the 2018 season that they would be a very young team. The Chargers are sitting at 3-5 overall and they went 1-4 in district 5 with a 5th place finish. Cherryvale played in a must win game against the Eureka Tornadoes to decide the last playoff spot last week. Coming up short with a 27-12 loss. They have wins against Erie , Leon Bluestem , and Neodesha. This is definitely a game they can use to get the younger players some more experience. Cade Addis and Garrett Novotny will be playing in their last game as Cherryvale Chargers among other seniors.

The Remmington Broncos lost seven games in a row to start the season before winning their last game against Wichita Independent 43-14. It will be a two hour drive for Charger fans making the trip to Whitewater.  Remmington finished in last place in the Heart of America league with an 0-4 league record.

Neodesha @ Wichita Independent

The Bluestreaks have been playing their best football as of late.  They are coming off a huge rivalry upset with a big 35-20 win over the Fredonia Yellow Jackets who finished runner up in district 5.  Neodesha has a 1-7 record but had some opportunities in all but one of their district games to pick up victories.  The closest was the Belle Plain game where they went to double overtime eventually losing 33-27.

Wichita Indepenent is 0-8 and hasn’t played in a close game yet this season. The Panthers last playoff appearance was back in 2015 where they posted a 4-7 record. They have only one win in their last two seasons. The Panthers play in the Central Plains League .  Wichita Indepenent finished last place in district 6.

Northeast Arma

The Northeast Arma Vikings have a 0-8 record in 2018. They will not be playing in week 9 because of the 2A team that has forfeited their last few games. I believe that team is Oskaloosa who finished last in district 2 .

8 man week nine non playoff match ups

Howard – West Elk 1-7 @ Oxford 0-8

Chetopa 1-6 @ Rural Vista 1-7

Colony Crest 0-8 @ Melvern (MDCV) 0-8
