Is this the week the Cubs go down ? It could be but I don’t think this team will let that happen quite yet. This team has to much going right for them to lose now. They have been as close to healthy as they could possibly be at this point in the season. A lot of teams have either lost a key component to the squad or have lost several players to injuries. The one thing most Cub fans said at the beginning of this season was they aren’t as deep as last year. And I believe that to be true. Not as deep but very talented they are .
The 9-0 Humboldt Cubs will face off in round two of the Kansas class 2A playoffs against 8-1 Osage City. The last time Humboldt won two playoff games was in 2007. That team had a 8-1 regular season record only losing to Pittsburg Colgan 40-0 who went on to be the runner up in class 2A . I was the color guy on the radio for the Cubs that season and I remember it like it was yesterday . A talented group of young men they were.
Osage City is led by 5’4″ senior quarterback Trenton Plinsky . Don’t let the size fool you for one second. I watched this kid play wide receiver a season ago in a second round playoff game in which they defeated the Caney Valley Bullpups. He is ferocious out on the gridiron . He made the move to quarterback this season after the Indians had to replace graduating quarterback Tucker Kimball , who has walked on the Kansas State football team. Plinksy has thrown for over 1,000 yards and 21 touchdowns plus rushed for over 700 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is every bit a duel threat signal caller that Humboldt better be prepared to stop . Their next highest player in rushing yards in Mycah Ritchie with 400 with 5 touchdowns.
The Indians only loss this season is from 9-0 Silver Lake who some have ranked number 1 in the state. Osage City played really well for one half of football before Silver Lake dominated the second half for a 48-26 win in district play. There are two common opponents between the Cubs and the Indians in 2018. They have both played West Franklin and Southeast Cherokee . Osage City has wins against both 42-27 and 28-6 respectively . Humboldt has wins against those teams as well with 52-15 and 54-12 blow out victories. I am not sure I would look at the Southeast score any further than just wins for both. Last weeks game was probably played on a sloppy field unlike the nice home field turf that the Cubs had the pleasure to play on.
The Humboldt Cubs will need to clean up some mistakes from a week ago if they want to advance in the playoffs. The main one being personal foul penalties. The other is playing sound assignment defensive football. The defensive ends will have to play their best game of the season to keep Plinsky in check . They will need to force the Indians to try and use other weapons to beat them. I have no doubt they have worked on this all week in practice . On offense if Humboldt just keeps doing what they have been doing all season and not try to be something they are not they will do just fine. With Conor Haviland and Dagen Goodner being a duel threat themselves the Indians will have their hands full as well. Haviland is coming into this weeks game with 1,341 yards and 28 touchdowns. Goodner has been great as a first year signal caller with 761 yards passing and 12 touchdowns along with 842 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns. But I am predicting that seniors David Watts and Tucker Hurst will be the Mvp’s if the Cubs are to win this big time playoff game. The winner will play the winner of the Rossville / Maur Hill-Mount Hill Academy game in the sectional round (final 8).
